Do you know where I can get copies of advertisements on egg donations within reimbursement and financial incentives subjects within research journals, magazines, student newspapers for example. I need this for a bioethics paper.

Angela, you come up with hard questions! We like a challenge!

The only place that immediately pops into my mind- that is, a resource in which you can specifically search full text through advertisements- is our New York Times historical archive. And I'm not sure if the NYT is likely to have those kinds of advertisements, but it is worth a shot.

From our list of research databases, use "New York Times Historical", then select the "Advanced Search" tab. In the advanced search screen, you'll see three search boxes with drop down search types next to them that say "citation and document text". Pull down the first one and select "document type". A link will appear that says "browse document types". Select "display ad" and it will past it into the search box. Then enter "egg donation" (or similar) into the next search box. See what comes up. You might also try a document type of "classified ad".

I'll ruminate on other ways to search for these kinds of adverts and will post again if I come up with any bright ideas. Perhaps my colleagues will think of something as well.

Good luck, sounds like an interesting topic!

Saw this ad for egg donation on Craigslist today in the part-time jobs forum:

Actually, I thought I remembered seeing such an ad in the Observer at some point last year or the year before. Perhaps I am misremembering, though. In any case, you might contact the Observer staff to see if they have some record of the ad, or at least scan through some back issues.

Chris, you're right. There was also a letter-to-the-editor concerning the ad, the following week. Google reveals that the letter is online at http://observer.case.edu/Archives/Volume_40/Issue_6/Story_1981/. Since the letter was from Oct. 5, the ad was presumably published the week before -- September 28, 2007. Check the Observer office, I bet they have a copy.

Chris, you're right.

Boo-ya! Does that mean I get to lay down some librarian trash talk on Claspy?

The Observer did, in fact, run an advert in the classies section on 28 Sept. looking for egg donors. If you stop by the office (in the basement of Thwing) on Wednesday, there will be plenty of people around to secure you a copy of the issue.

And that would be different from your usual behavior.... how? :-)

It's actually interesting how a posting to a forum like this one works in addition to "normal" information gathering like using a search engine or index, etc. Two leads (craigslist and Observer) that I'm pretty sure aren't indexed anywhere!

I'm wondering if the ad in the Observer is where Angela got the idea?

I got the idea from an ad I saw in Akron Family Magazine
