Exporting References into Office 2007

Office 2007 has a built in reference management tool. As I don't have a copy of Endnote and am unwilling to pay $50 for something that comes bundled with Word, I was hoping someone knew a way to get either RIS citations or Refer citations into Microsoft office 2007.

Thanks,

Joshua Terchek

Joshua-

I'm hoping one of my colleagues will also reply- reference management tools are not my specialty- but I believe most of our research databases allow exporting of references in RIS format. And/or you can use RefWorks' Word plug-in called Write-N-Cite.

RefWorks is free to all campus users and is an excellent reference management tool. It works both in conjunction with the research databases, or for manually entering references.

RefWorks at CWRU

I hope this helps, but stay tuned for more input.

Joshua,
I've only briefly seen the Word 2007 Reference manager. My impression of it was not too favorable. I did not understand how it created a database of your resources so you could save/sort/ and use them. It did not seem intuitive to use or nearly as powerful as the other citation tools that are out there.

I can investigate it further in the next couple of days and get back to you with more information.

However, Bill is correct- RefWorks is a great tool that is 1.) FREE 2.) Word compatible 3.) super easy to use 4.)compatible with nearly all our databases. and taught by me! (LOL)

More info by Wedneday- (I'm at home today with no access to Word 2007.)

From my understanding, Office 2007 uses XML to create the database. You can sort and specify your sources in the "manage sources" tab.

I have converted to Refworks in order to get this current project done, but have several concerns regarding it.

1) It only works if I am on line
2) What happens to my ability to use this service once I leave Case?
3) I do not like having to convert. With word, I specify the reference from a pull down list, the style, and it is inserted in the text as well as at the end.
4) Its a shame I cannot add references using Write-N-Cite, and have to go to yet another window to add something new.

So far, manually inputting is identical in the two. The only problem I have is with importing references from research databases into Word.

Thanks for your help already and the quick responses.

*edited to clarify my concerns while adding an additional one.

Thanks Brian for addressing these concerns as well.

It is my understanding that RefWorks is addressing this in a future version as it is one of the most highly requested capabilities.

RefWorks does allow you to pick the citation format: http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/help/Refworks.htm#Using_Write-N-Cite.htm
