Inscriptions

I've decided to run a "name the campus location in this photo!" contest. (I know, I know, how very original!)

I have taken a series of 22 photos, each of which features an inscription or other piece of text from a campus location. If you can identify the location, post it in this thread - the more detailed your description, the better. Some photos are closely cropped, so in that case you may also provide some extra information about the full content of the text. Bonus points if you can provide a relevant historical anecdote (even if you aren't the first to identify the location). I will not consider the picture "solved" until a non-anonymous poster has provided a sufficient level of detail.

The photos vary in difficulty/obscurity. I expect that some will be quite easy to solve but hopefully a few will prove rather more challenging.

I'll post the photos one at a time. A new photo will be posted shortly after the currently outstanding one has been identified; however, I will rate-limit the new photos to two postings every 48 hours.

There may possibly be (small) prizes, but mostly you are competing for eternal fame and glory. smile smiley

Enjoy, and good luck!

Correct! It's the Sam W. Emerson Physical Education Center, to be pedantic. The full inscription used to be CASE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY but some of it has now been obscured by additions.

Wow, an original sign with 'CWRU' on it... not only might this picture be hard to guess, it might also belong in the Archives!

Actually, this isn't an old sign, it's a relatively new one (w/in the last six months, I believe). I want to say I've seen these around the Frances Payne Bolton School Of Nursing, near the bottom of the outdoor stairway that leads up to the rest of the Medical School buildings (that may even be where this one is from), but I'm not certain.

You got it. This one is just outside the ground floor entrance of FPB.

The next photo will be coming tomorrow evening; in the meantime, feel free to post your tales from Emerson Gym or the nursing school...

Well, heck, I'll do it. That would be the main inscription for the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, if I'm not seriously mistaken.
