Quality 3rd party replacement laptop batteries?

I'm looking for a Latitude X300 laptop battery, and Dell wants an astonishing $250 for it! Thats half the cost of a new Vostro 1500 :)

Does anyone know of a reputable third party who makes decent laptop batteries?

You can get the same batteries for a fraction of the cost on eBay. This one here will run you about $70 shipped.

Chances of failure? Probably high.

If you're going the third-party route, make sure to get a battery with Japanese cells; they're generally significantly higher quality than generic Chinese cells.

Thats what I'm afraid of :) No idea what the listing Ryan found uses.

I'd prefer something with the least chance of catching fire!

David -- while I wouldn't trust a "generic" battery off of eBay, if you can find a Dell-brand battery that matches the part number on the battery you have, you should be just fine. My battery completely died last year and rather than spend $150 on a new one from Dell, I spent $25 for a Dell battery on eBay. It has already lasted three months longer than my original battery did, so I'm calling it a very good deal.

If you are still looking for a battery for your X300 I can get one for you for at least half the cost from Dell direct. I deal with a North American distributor of replacement batteries. The battery itself will carry a 1 year warranty as well. Let me know.

Buying a battery off Ebay is a fine idea if you just want one that works. If you want one that can hold a decent charge, ebay almost certainly isnt for you. The problem with Batteries is that, by there nature, they lose charge. Its just how the operate, and not a sign of someone taking bad care of one.

A new battery might have a 100% charge that lasts 4 hours, while a year old battery might only last 2 hours at 100%. Ebay batteries are always used, and therefore always hold a bad charge (in my experience a ebay battery is almost always around 60% max charge).

Not all batteries off of Ebay are used. It's pretty easy to just type in 'new oem dell' battery and find a huge listing of brand new batteries. I purchased a new dell battery for my Dell C600 about 2 years ago(July 2006), and its still giving me around 3 hours of battery life.

They might be new, but they probably aren't fresh off the assembly line. I don't want one thats lost 10% of its capacity from having sat in some warehouse for 6 months.

I found a Lenmar brand battery I'm happy with, and its manufacture date was a testament to its freshness. Made in china from Japanese cells.
