Samuel Rees: I think messages like this are uncalled for. Sam, why do your messages always degrade to this status? |

Nicholas Lafrenz: Not really, for the linux client you install the vpnc client from the command line ('sudo aptitude install vpnc'), and edit one configuration file as per the instructions on http://wiki.case.edu/Virtual_Private_Network, instead of downloading the pre-configured client (like you do for Mac and Windows). A tiny bit more manual effort maybe, but not more difficult by any means. Samuel Rees: I'll echo the above poster's sentiment about how this was completely unnecessary. Edited 1 time(s). From my own experience, for OS X I simply installed the pre-configured client, launch the client, and login.
For Linux I had to manually install (not using apt) and then I had to patch it, rebuild, and even then it's not as simple to use. More difficult, by definition, means more effort. I'm not saying it's the most difficult thing to get working, but it required more effort. And yes, it is subjective in that I'm referring to my experience with the versions I was using at the time I installed them. But the point really doesn't matter so much, except in that the "way to be an idiot" comment was out of line. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit was june 08, 03:26pm by Nicholas Lafrenz. |

OMG. I called someone an idiot. Previously I used the word tool. But that post was deleted...
Yes the linux vpn client is harder. No cisco has not updated their binary blob to the current kernel version in forever. That has absolutely nothing to do with any of this. My point is that the loverly Mac user just exemplified how he knows nothing of what VPN does to the underneath of a system, but believes that because it says Apple it must be better than whatever those linux/windows/blackberry/<technology not apple> people have. I get tired of the Mac superiority, when they haven't the faintest idea what the hell is going on in their systems. Its just one more example of yuppie elitism moved into technology. Lets just expand that, I have a problem with idiots and yuppies everywhere. Same goes for idiots who buy designer purses, or this new one I just heard of, designer glasses? like..prescriptions. (I stripped a screw on my frames today, so I soldered them back together. They hold like a charm. Do that with Prada.) Ever seen the leather at Hot Topic or 99% of anyone who isn't Wilson leather? (and some of their stuff too.) Its leather veneer (plastic maybe?) over what looks like chopped and compressed cotton. Nobody noticed..... Nobody knows how to work leather.. And then they pay more for it. And then with their ipod in their LV bag, look down their Prada, sip their starbucks and scoff at the hippes at Salvation Army. Argue over technology all you want. Honestly I find problems with it all. But ffs know what the hell your talking about. Have I posted this link before? I do hope its properly out of line. Edited 1 time(s). Samuel Rees: Is your goal to see how many people you can offend? I find many of your post hold relevant information but how you treat people ruins the message. |

Simple. Stop being offended. I'm not offended, why should others be? (sorry for the off topicness) |

Sareen, you may want to talk to Paul Zawolowycz in E...304? of the Robbins building. Its across the hall from E303. He handles all the IT issues for students at the School of Medicine. Maybe he can help you out. |

Samuel Rees: It does not matter if you are offended. Your posts have a history of name calling and just plain being disrespectful to others. I better if we look back many discussions grind to a stop once you chime in. |

Samuel Rees: He posted one sentence with a wink at the end. Did you really read all that into his post? The only thing worse than Mac users who think they're superior is people in general who claim they're superior to said Mac users because of trite, inaccurate generalizations. |

I'm pretty sure that Benjamin's comment was referring to using SSH via the Darwin terminal, and not anything involving Cisco VPN. Or at least that's how I interpreted it.
