Smartphone and Email

Hello,
I'd like to get a smartphone so that I can check my email when I'm away from a computer. My question is: how easy is it to get the phone to synchronize with the CWRU email (first preference) or a gmail account (second preference).

3 phones I am especially considering at the iphone, blackberry, and palm.

Thanks,
David

Are you aware of GoogleApps ??

it's pretty easy, to be honest. both the providers you mentioned will allow you to synchronize your email via POP (eww) or IMAP (yea).

i think David's suggestion of GoogleApps is a nice solution for you -

1. just go to the so-called "provisioning" page and specify where you'd like your email to go. if you send it all to the GoogleApps mail, you can then

2. go to http://webmail.case.edu and after logging in, click on "settings" in the top right corner. then

3. click on the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab, enable IMAP, and follow the configuration instructions given by the link on that page.

or, if you don't feel like doing all of this, hand the phone to one of your tech-savvy friends and say "set up my email." but i think it's best to learn how to do it yourself :-)

PS - i would wait for the 3g iPhone to come out (really soon, supposedly) if that is at the top of your list. granted, it may have its own share of problems, but it sounds like it will be significantly superior to the first generation iPhone.

i'll add, however, that i don't personally care for MP3 functionality in my phone, and when i had a Blackberry i loved the interface and ease of use. you should also closely scrutinize the monthly expenses associated with having both voice and data plans, as they vary widely across hardware and carrier.

You can also set the smartphone's mail app to just receive mail from mail.case.edu via IMAP if you're not interested in GoogleApps for whatever reason. You can send mail via smtp.cwru.edu too. Just use your Case ID and password for both.

And yeah, if you're thinking about the iPhone, wait until after next week.

Thanks! I'm happy to hear that its easy to sync with the Case email. Yah I will probably end up getting the iphone next week...if I can.

If I were you I would look at either an iPhone, Blackberry Curve, or a Samsung Blackjack II. Do not get a Palm as the software on the Centro is ridiculously outdated and the Windows Mobile 6 transition to the Palm hardware isn't seamless.

As far as data goes, the iPhone data packages will be the least expensive with unlimited internet.

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure of the three phones you mentioned, the iPhone is the only one with WiFi. Perfect for a campus nearly totally covered by wireless.

In terms of a "smart phone" there is no real competition to the iPhone. I don't believe you can get one of the google Andriod prototypes, nor the Fic Neo 1973.

I do hear they are updating mobile IE so it...doesn't suck. Webkit is killing everyone, even opera right now. You could always look at the HTC Touch, sprint gives you an 8% discount if you go to Case.

speaking of this, what authentication method does the campus wi-fi use? i'm wondering (and doubting) if it will be compatible with my iPod touch.
