Dear Anonymous,
Speaking as the nerd who designed this (a nerd with experience in design for print and web), I don't find the wiki to be grotesque, but will allow that we all have our own tastes. Ye need not fear my angry backlash! Andrew is right that the logo did provide us with certain constraints. Rather than using the web templates we created a variation to differentiate the wiki from standard web pages, while also maintaining a familiar look. It is also meant to coordinate with http://blog.case.edu/directory/. The navy and lime are part of the Case color palette. The lime menu bar is meant to offer easy navigation, while the color serves to differentiate it from the content of the individual wiki pages. I chose a serif font for the entries because this is easier to read when one has large blocks of text such as that found at http://wiki.case.edu/University_Circle. With that said, I do find that as the wiki grows and people use it in different ways, I sometimes see things that made more sense visually in the prototype phase than they do in real use. Accordingly Greg and I make occassional tweaks to the style sheet, and will probably continue to do so. If you have specific questions or suggestions please let us know. |

I think that maybe this thread's "Subject" is a little incorrect. I think that it's not the color scheme that is not the best, I think it's the layout that needs some work. To be honest the layout is very reminiscent of Myspace. Especially when compared to start, forums, and filer (Planet doesn't count since it's uses "Blog Layout", USG page can't be compared because it follows case's layout, and I don't even want to talk about Case's default email client)
I just think that a few tweaks here and there could make wiki much more visually stimulating. |

I agree with Matthew. Its not the color scheme that I think is the problem. Actually I think the colors are pretty good, within the confines of the Case palette.
The problem I have is that the interface takes up so much of the page that the actual content gets squished. There's a lot of unnecessary scrolling because of the size of the top bar. |

For what it is worth, I made a minor update to the skin today. I modified the banner so that it is roughly half the height it once was. You may need to do a force refresh in your browser (Shift + Refresh in Firefox) for the CSS changes to update. Again, I am always up for suggestions regarding the layout, style, etc. I definitely interested in some minimalistic skins, like Andrew's. |
