Famous Case-isms

I propose this as a new topic thread: if you see a Case person or university reference in a famous position, post about it!

Here's mine: I watched the movie JFK last night, then started researching the whole coverup stuff online, and played the excellent game "JFK Reloaded." In looking up information on JFK Reloaded, I found a website detailing some of the history and evidence that inspired the game in a very impartial and informative manner: JFKaos at http://www.io.com/~o_m/jfkaos/jfkaos.htm.

The website describes an independent commision that in 1968 was to investigate autopsy evidence the Warren Commission chose to ignore (because Earl Warren seems to be a bit queasy)

"
The Clark Panel

In 1968, then-US Attorney General Ramsey Clark led a Justice Department panel to reopen and analyze the autopsy evidence not directly viewed by the Warren Commission. The Panel's consisted of the following members selected for their experience in the field of forensic science:

* William H. Carnes, MD, professor of pathology, University of Utah.
* Russell S. Fisher, MD, famed Baltimore medical examiner.
* Russell H. Morgan, MD, the head of the radiology department at Johns Hopkins University.
* Alan R. Moritz, MD, professor of pathology at Case Western Reserve University.
"

Note the last dude. Woohoo! We have a famous medical dude! Their commission agreed with the single bullet from the Depository (isn't a book depository just a library?), so nothing too special, but hey, it's still pretty cool.

Yeah, but then so does the University of Utah, so it cancels out.

One famous controbution CWRU made to the burgeoning Internet was the Cleveland Freenet. Based on its success, the founder, Dr. Thomas M. Grundner went on to form the National Public Telecomputing Network to create other Freenets around the US and eventually around the globe.

Dr. Thomas M. Grundner is famous for another reason - as a child pornographer.

http://workscited.net/sourcedisp.php?sourceid=274

Plain Dealer:
Federal prosecutors charged the founder of the Cleveland Free-Net computer system yesterday with possessing child pornography. Thomas M. Grundner of Cleveland Heights faces a charge of possessing three or more books, magazines, films, videotapes and other materials that contained depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Plain Dealer:
This was Thomas Grundner's typical day: He went in to work at 8 or 9 a.m., shut the door to his office, turned on his computer and began downloading pornographic pictures from the Internet. After two or three hours of downloading, he would go to lunch. In the afternoon, he worked for four or five hours at his job as the head of the National Public Telecomputing Network and then went back to downloading pornography until 8 or 9 p.m.

Plain Dealer:
Two former employees of the group turned him in to the FBI after finding a large cache of pornography in the offices after he resigned. They also found thousands of dollars in cash and videos of female employees engaged in sex acts, according to the lawsuit.

Its a real shame one of the great contributions of the University is tainted by this man's reputation. It seems like most of this activities occured after he left CWRU and founded the National Public Telecomputing Network.

The opening scene of Air Force One was shot at Severance Hall. (Is that the kind of thing you are looking for?)

The website for that game "Full Spectrum Warrior" (couple years old now) used to have a flash graphic on it's website that showed a map with little dots (I suppose representing troops or something?) moving about it. The map was none other than a cropped section of a map of Case campus with Thwing replaced with another building. I emailed them about it but never got a response, they did replace it with a different image though.

I'm sure that I have a bunch more of these, but I can't think of them.

All I can find of that map is this site talking about it:

Better than nothing, I guess.

One of the characters rips on Case's communications program in Being John Malkovich, perhaps the reason why it has been terminated.

Umm reminder: Communication STUDIES got axed, not Communication DISORDERS. In Being John Malkovich, the character uses the following line:
Quote:
LESTER (flips off switch)
Fine woman, Floris. I don't know how she puts up with this damn speech impediment of mine.

CRAIG
You don't have a speech impediment, Dr. Lester.

LESTER
Flattery will get you everywhere, my boy. But I'm afraid I have to trust Floris on this one. You see, she has her doctorate in speech impedimentology from Case Western. Perhaps you've read her memoirs, "I can't understand a word any of you are saying."

"Speech Impedimentology" == Communication Disorders, which is a thriving department at Case (with a recent new hire). It is an actually useful major, unlike Communication Studies, which is good for... well, it's not like an employer will punish you for it.

Funny you would call "communication studies" not important when communication is usually a key to an organization's success and employee happiness.
