Forum does not remember what I have read

I dunno why it is, but the Forum does not remember what I have read, when I move from reading a topic back out to the list of topics.
Say I read thread, get to the last page. I go back out to the list, and it doesn't show that I have read the thread; stuff still shows as "new". If I explicitly say "Mark Thread Read" then it does remove the "new"...but more often than not, other threads that I have already read, or marked read in previous sessions, suddenly will all reappear as "new". It's annoying, since I only drop by the Forum occasionally. I want old read threads to stay read :-S This is all with being officially logged in as rfd. Is it something with my web browser? I am using Safari under MacOS X 10.4.8, 17" Powerbook G4, all Software Updates current. I don't really have anything else to try. *Rich* |

What happens if you mark each forum as read on the main page? It may be that the forum software can't deal with you having thousands of unread posts from way back when.
I think I saw a Phorum module that would mark all posts as read for a new account, this might solve the issue if its what I think it is. |

Are you using your browser's back button instead of clicking the links back to the homepage? The back button reloads your browser's cache instead of fetching the page again, so it would still show the posts marked as unread. Fix this by either refreshing the page once you get to it by the back button or only using the links at the top of the forum to navigate. |

Thomas Cusick: Nope, I am clicking on the name of the forum at the top of the page to go back to the list of topics. When I get to the end of what I want to read, I click "Mark Thread Read" then click the forum name. When it brings up the list of topics in the forum, some/all may now appear flagged red as "new". *Rich* |

To maybe add a little light to this (I'm seeing the same thing on Shiira 1.2.2 on OS X 10.4.9)... for me, it only started happening when I changed my viewing preferences for Thread Override - View to "View Threaded." When I go back to Default there, the problem seems to go away. |

Hmm... you aren't supposed to be using Threaded view, because it doesn't work quite right (as you seem to have noticed). I thought it was disabled; guess I'll have to double-check that.
If you still have problems in Normal view, please do tell. |

Nope. The "new" thing got so frustrating, I switched back to default. |

I just stumbled onto this in Normal view, but I think I also discovered how it happened... if I'm reading a thread and click "mark thread read," it then also marks every other thread in that forum UNread. |

Bryan Inderhees: This is exactly correct. I guess the thing to do is *NEVER* use "mark thread read". Fortunately, the "mark forum" read works correctly. *Rich* |
