I think I've proposed this before, but I would really like to see more forums on this site. A lot more.

For example:

Case-related
General
General (Case Only)
Ask a Librarian
Academic (for classroom help)
Help (general help for doing stuff at Case)
Computer Help
Social Scene
Civilized Debate (for people who argue with grace and elegance)

Misc (all unmoderated forums)
Link Dump (videos, blogs, etc)
News
Science
Politics
Sports

I think people would use the forums more if there were more topics to discuss. I'd love to start some political or sports topics, but not in the confines of the general discussion forums.

Thoughts?

I vote a resounding no. On all the other forum sites I use, people only visit the one with the most posts. Fracturing the forums will make people read less threads, and in turn reply less.

There is a point to be made that General Discussion and Case Things are one too many, but I personally like this setup.

Please, we have too many forums already. Look how many have traffic. Feedback, Moderators, Development? I bet we could lose one of those. General Discussion, Case Things, Ask A Librarian. I wish we had just one of these forums, but they are all pretty much necessary. If we could have one forum where you had a checkbox for "case campus only" that masked the name and only allowed logged-in lusers to read the thread then we could lose Case Things. Ask A Librarian is harder, since it could potentially serve a useful purpose, but simply does not get much traffic. I say we leave it until a better solution is found.

Not only do I agree with Dave's point, I think that partitioning the forum will unnecessarily increase the burden on the moderators who would then have to "sort" wrongly-placed threads into the correct forum.

Alrighty then. The democracy has spoken. It sure would be nice if people could tag threads and/or posts...

How about an "ignore thread" option, so if I've already written off a thread, I don't need to be told about new posts? Like the Case Life thread, for instance.

I'd love that option. It's so annoying to read the same classifieds over and over because someone bumped them.
