Yeah I mean this behavior was so bizarre I just had to post on the Forum to see if it happened to anyone else. Two computers just shutoff on their own while everything else stays powered (and a third one becomes unresponsive). And one common thread is that they were all running Linux. That's too weird to let go, ya know?

I'm in House 3 and my Linux desktop and file server both shutoff at approximately 11:50AM today. My roommate also has a Linux machine in his room that became unreachable at the same time as well (but did not forcefully power off like mine). It wasn't a power outage since all of my other electronics (on the same power strip) stayed on, including my Windows machine. My roommate's Mac stayed on as well.

I fully expect this thread to be ignored, but if anyone has any info, it would definitely settle the curiosities of myself and the few other linux hackers I asked about this already.

MIT has more than enough people that are willing to intellectualize for intellectualizing's sake--so the whiteboards get put to good use. However, at Case, there are far fewer people who would care to talk about problems that aren't related to their own field or aren't going to be on the test.

I like the idea of putting whiteboards up around campus. Once when I was working on a programming project with another student, we extensively used the whiteboards in Clark tower. And with how much traffic goes through that area, we had a good chance to talk to people about what we were doing and get feedback--and volunteers for testing :)

I like to be exposed to what other people are learning about and whiteboards are a good way to do that. Also, it helps to feel a little more connected to students who aren't in the same academic program as me because I still have a feel for what they are doing.

The problem with KSL's whiteboards is that those study rooms are rarely available. Also, I think they aren't likely to promote collaboration because only one group of people are ever going to be in the room at once, and whatever is written on the boards is likely going to erased soon after. Whiteboards should be placed at highly connected campus nodes so that whatever is written can be seen by a variety of people.

I would discourage putting the boards in a place that would result in people assuming that the boards are for a particular academic program only (hence, not in only in labs). This would cause outsiders to ignore the boards. Placing the boards in an area that is "program-neutral" will encourage cross-disipline interaction.

Though I do like the idea of putting whiteboards around campus to stimulate collaboration, there is a good chance that it wouldn't work as well as it does at MIT. Let's think, what do you need for quality collaboration (the sorts that would be done via whiteboarding)? You need people who are interesting in learning and knowledge. MIT has more than enough people that are willing to intellectualize for intellectualizing's sake--so the whiteboards get put to good use. However, at Case, there are far fewer people who would care to talk about problems that aren't related to their own field or aren't going to be on the test. There aren't as many people that see the benefit in whiteboard collaboration. It just doesn't seem to be a cool thing to do.

Because of this, I can imagine public whiteboards quickly going to waste. Even worse, the whiteboards could become an eyesore or embarassment. When people draw penises or write vulgar words on the dorm whiteboards, only portions of the campus see, but when the same is written on public boards (say, in nord), all of Case will see (the important non-undergrads).

These were my thoughts. Please take them with a grain of salt :)
