Currently, there is a group that includes faculty, administration, and at least one student that is called the "SAGES Impact Committee". They sent a survey to students, have been looking at class reviews for SAGES, etc.--the bulk of the class of 2009 will be seniors next year, the first class of full SAGES implementation. Their goal is to figure out what some of the problems and values of SAGES have been.

USG recently wrote and passed a resolution that requests that regardless of whether the CSE proposal is accepted or rejected, the results be applied to all undergraduates. In other words if SAGES University seminars become optional for CSE, then they should become optional for everyone.

The committee that is dealing with this issue is the University Undergraduate Faculty (UUF) Curriculum Committee, headed by John Blackwell. They report to the UUF Exec. Committee, and then from there things go to a vote by all of undergraduate faculty.

I sit on the UUF Exec. Committee as a student representative, so I hear the reports from Dr. Blackwell--sounds like they want a resolution to this issue by December.
You are correct about it replacing English Comp. requirements and classes. I think my point is illustrated in the following story: SAGES students are required to provide a portfolio of work from their SAGES classes. When one is unable to do so, work from other classes is an appropriate substitute, if cleared with the SAGES office. Most of my portfolio work was from non-SAGES classes, in the case of the largest "research paper," my work was from a self-directed study. I passed with the highest comments on every part of the portfolio.

If the goal is composition, that should be the focus. It's fortunate that SAGES is less boring than a straight composition class might be, but it's equally unfortunate that the writing part of the class is overshadowed by the component of the class that most resembles my other classes. I think that fostering proper academic communication, whether it be written or verbal, is a goal of higher education as a whole. I'm concerned that SAGES isn't really adding anything to the undergraduate experience of Case students.
If the school of Engineering decides to lower the requirement, that's fine with me. I just hope the school of Arts and Sciences follows suit, especially considering that there is little difference between most of my small, seminar-like liberal arts classes, and the small, seminar-based SAGES classes.

I really feel that part of the SAGES curriculum wasn't well thought out. I'm not convinced I got anything different from SAGES that I couldn't have already gotten from most of my classes already.
I thought SAGES replaced some specific English composition classes. Is that true? If so, it has a very specific purpose and is not considered an equivalent to your seminar-like liberal arts classes. It make take the same format of instruction and participation but the goal and purpose is different.

Not a rumor. And it is Engineering trying to reduce, not end its relationship. It is not SAGES taking the action.
